Applying the Marquette Brand in Print

Photography Style

The primary photography for Marquette’s creative platform features students, faculty, staff and alumni in interesting environments that bring Marquette’s difference to life. Emphasis is placed on a direct connection between the viewer and the subject. The focus is on the subject with a limited depth of field, leaving the background soft and less defined.

Subject Selection

A critical aspect of the Marquette brand platform is its authenticity. This is achieved in part through the use of real people to tell the Marquette story — students, faculty, alumni, coaches, etc. — as opposed to an institutional, “off-camera” voice.

Care should be taken to select subjects who:

  • have an interesting or unique story to tell.

  • are representative of the specific target audience

  • portray the diversity of the institution

  • are approachable and authentic

Support Photography

The imagery chosen to support the creative platform should be vibrant, active and emotive. These images should capture the energy of real-life experiences relating to the primary photography or the essence of the content being promoted. The emphasis is placed on reality-based interactive experiences that convey a sense of immediacy and evoke a playful, amateur tone that is engaging and authentic.

Undergraduate

  • Undergraduate images emphasize warm tones to project youthfulness and compliment Marquette gold, a primary color of undergraduate promotions

  • Support imagery is lifestyle focused, in essence snapshots of “a day in the life.” The imagery should be vibrant, active and emotive.

  • Central focus should be considered, and elements of fun, self-awareness, growth, playfulness, campus life and warmth should be clear.

Graduate/Adult Student

  • Graduate/adult images emphasize cool tones that reflect a more professional environment and compliment floods of Marquette blue, a primary color used in graduate and adult student promotions.

  • Graduate student photography is of life experiences in professional settings, with a more professional style and some motion. The imagery reflects the essence of a specific discipline or field of study.

  • Central focus should be considered and elements of professional confidence should be clear.

Alumni

  • Alumni photography should reflect diversity and be warm, vibrant and active.

  • Alumni photography ranges from images of life experiences in relevant settings with a professional style to active, emotive images of alumni in social settings.
