The Marquette University Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) oversees the university’s animal programs, facilities and procedures insuring the appropriate care, use, and humane treatments of animals being used for research, testing and education. The IACUC serves as a resource to faculty, investigators, technicians, students, staff and administrators, providing guidance in fulfilling the obligation to plan and conduct all animal use procedures with the highest scientific, humane and ethical principles.

Marquette's Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) is responsible for the oversight and evaluation of animal-related activities at Marquette University. The IACUC members are assigned by the University’s Institutional Official and consist of at least one scientist, one veterinarian, one non-scientist and one non-affiliated member. As required, at least five members serve on the IACUC. In addition to the IACUC, there is also a Chief Executive Officer (President of Marquette University), Institutional Official, Research Compliance Officer/Animal Resource Center Director, Animal Care and Facility supervisor, animal care technicians and students who are all involved with animal use and care at Marquette University.

The use of animals for research and teaching are a privilege, not a right. High standards exist for the care and use of animals at Marquette University. Marquette University maintains an Animal Welfare Assurance Statement which declares its compliance with the various regulations and policies. Failure by any individual to adhere to these standards can jeopardize Marquette University’s entire animal care and use program. The program is monitored by federal regulatory agencies (USDA-APHIS and OLAW) and an accreditation agency (AAALAC).
