The primary functions of the Marquette University IACUC include:
IACUC Policies and Procedures
- Review, at least once every six months, the university’s Animal Care and Use Program, using the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (Guide), NRC 2011, as a basis for evaluation.
- Inspect, at least once every six months, all the university’s animal facilities using the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (Guide), NRC 2011, as a basis for evaluation.
- Prepare reports of the IACUC evaluations conducted as required by i. and ii. Above and submit these reports to the Institutional Official. The reports are updated at least once every six months upon completing of the required semiannual evaluations. Such reports contain a description of the nature and extent of adherence to, and also identify and explain departures from, the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals and NIH (OLAW)/USDA Policy. The reports distinguish significant deficiencies from minor deficiencies. A significant deficiency being one which, consistent with NIH(OLAW)/USDA Policy, and, in judgment of the IACUC and the Institutional Official, is or may be a threat to the health or safety of the animals. If deficiencies are recorded, the reports must contain a reasonable and specific plan and completion date for correcting each deficiency. Marquette University’s Animal Care and Use Program is accredited by AAALAC international, and all major deficiencies will be reflected in the annual report to AAALAC. The reports are signed by the IACUC.
- Review reported concerns of animal welfare involving animal care and use at Marquette.
- Make recommendations to the Institutional Official regarding any aspect of the Marquette University animal care and use program, animal resource center facilities, or personnel training.
- Review and approve all new animal care and use protocols, modifications, and annual reviews.
- Be authorized to suspend an activity involving animals. If the IACUC suspends an activity involving animals, the Institutional Official, in consultation with the IACUC, will review the reasons for the suspension, take the appropriate corrective actions, and will report that action to the NIH Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW).
- The IACUC will ensure that all personnel involved with animal care and use, are provided training on humane practice and the concept, availability and use of research, teaching, or testing methods that replace, reduce, or refine the use of animals or animal distress.
- The IACUC will ensure that all personnel involved with animal care and use, are provided with training on occupational health and safety, their implementation and function in promoting employee well-being when working with laboratory animals.
