The McCormick Hall Inclusive Leadership CommUNITY is a vibrant residential learning community open to all undergraduate students. It has male and female wings and houses 70 residents. Students from minority and majority cultures have an opportunity to interact with and learn from each other in an environment accepting of all people.
Participation in a two-semester seminar focusing on cultural diversity is required of all members of the CommUNITY. Students enhance their knowledge of cultures through readings and attendance at cultural events on campus and within the city. Students earn 1.5 credit hours after completing each semester.
Students develop and cultivate leadership skills through planning and implementing social and educational programs with cultural themes, including dinners, speakers and retreats.
Valuable resources to aid in the programming process are available through the Office of Residence Life, McCormick Hall staff, Office of Student Development and Marquette University Student Government. Students are encouraged to share their experiences and knowledge through involvement in other student organizations and activities.
CommUNITY mission statement
CommUNITY is more than a living option for Marquette freshmen and more than a class students take to learn about social justice and leadership. As members of CommUNITY, we are proud to bring our different cultures, races, religions and opinions to McCormick Hall. We do this through our daily interactions with one another; the birthday parties and ethnic celebrations we share; the service projects we take part in; and the discussions and debates we have in class.
Our main belief is that there is always something to be learned, no matter who has the floor in a discussion or what cultural program we attend on the Marquette campus. When we participate in cross-cultural events we do so with an open mind, determined to broaden our knowledge of the world around us. We want CommUNITY to be a cultural experience that challenges students to open up themselves to different ways of thinking and living.
