Thank you for your interest and acknowledging the importance of social justice education in your student experience at Marquette University. The focus of this retreat is to help educate participants about the concepts of social justice and leadership through exploration of their own stories & experiences and those of others, and the issues of oppression and privilege. Participants will gain an understanding around social justice issues, enhance self-awareness skills, and develop action plans.
You should expect to take part in many activities, interactions, and dialogue with peers to explore topics around social justice and leadership. Dialogue opens possibilities of understanding multiple perspectives and is an important part in the learning process. Actively participating in dialogue and activities during the retreat will help with achieving the end goal of taking what you learned from the retreat back to the Marquette community.
All retreat participants are expected to be available for the entirety of the retreat. Your leadership experience will begin on Saturday, January 19th @ 9:00am – Monday, January 21st @ 4:30pm. Please be aware that on Monday, January 21, 2013 classes will not be in session in recognition of Martin Luther King Jr. holiday observation.
All Marquette undergraduate students are invited to apply, although priority will be given to sophomores and juniors. Our goal is to have 20 participants with different identities, different levels of leadership involvement, and different levels of understanding about social justice who will benefit from and contribute to the retreat experience.
The retreat will take place at Camp Duncan located in Ingleside, Illinois. Participants will stay in heated cabins with bathrooms and bed furnishings. Participants will be responsible for bringing linens and other overnight toiletries.
$40.00*. The retreat cost includes meals, lodging, transportation, and a t-shirt for participants.
