POLICIES & PROCEDURES
Beginning fall semester 2012, Marquette University will implement some changes to the student code of conduct, specifically the alcohol and drug policies, which will be effective at the beginning of this fall semester.
Marquette University is committed to the educational success and the well-being of our students. For the last several years, this community has focused on a harm-reduction message about alcohol and drugs. We want students to be educated about alcohol and drugs, including knowing about the laws applicable and the potential consequences of violating state laws and/or university policies. We hope students will use that knowledge to make decisions that are minimally harmful to themselves or others.
High-risk alcohol and drug use have continued to rise among Marquette students at a cost to the University and to one another. In a continued effort to be transparent with students and to minimize the harm on campus due to alcohol and drugs, students who violate the alcohol and/or drug policies will be assessed a fine as one of their student conduct outcomes. The specific violations and fines are detailed in full in the student handbook. The monies collected from the fines will go directly towards alcohol and drug education efforts.
Additionally, a complicity policy has been added to the student code of conduct. Students who condone or encourage another person's behavior that violates any standard of conduct may be in violation of the complicity policy. Marquette students are expected to remove themselves from locations where a policy is being violated, stop the behavior or report the incident. Students will no longer be charged with being in the presence of alcohol or drugs. We recognize simply being in the presence of alcohol and choosing not to drink is a low-risk decision and, in and of itself, is not a violation of the alcohol policy, but students are expected to hold themselves and each other accountable for maintaining the educational environment on campus.
The following policies and procedures have been established by administrators, faculty, staff, and students to ensure the maintenance of this campus ethos.
