Why should I consider the SUSTAIN: Excellence Program?
The experience of attending college is different for everyone. Some may find the academic, social and leadership transition easier or more difficult than others. SUSTAIN: Excellence is the type of program in place to assist students with successfully transitioning to college. SUSTAIN: Excellence offers a structured approach to develop meaningful connections, strengthen participants' sense of belonging at Marquette, enhance skills as leaders, and support individual success and achievement as participants work toward graduation.
Who are SUSTAIN: Excellence Protégés?
- SUSTAIN: Excellence Protégés are incoming or first-year students at Marquette interested in connecting with a current undergraduate Mentor, staff and alumni who can support with navigating their first year and become integrated in the Marquette community.
- Protégés are students looking to get involved with a program that will enhance their social and leadership experiences during their first year at Marquette.
- Protégés personally identify as a member in one or more of the communities the SUSTAIN: Excellence program seek to engage- students of color (i.e. Black/African American, Asian/Pacific Islander, Hispanic/Latino/a, Native American/American Indian, Multiracial, etc.), students from diverse religious background, first-generation students and/or an ally to the LGBTQ community.
- Protégés are committed to attending biweekly SUSTAIN: Excellence meetings to connect with their mentors and participate in SUSTAIN Success workshops.
- Protégés are committed to being a member in at least one Discussion Circles group (1MU, Sustain MEN {Male Empowerment Network}, Sustain DIVAs {Diverse Individuals Valuing Another})
What's in it for me?
- Being connected with a current MU student and trained Mentor who can serve as a resource and support person.
- Opportunities to develop personal social, intercultural, and leadership skills to enhance your success as an MU student
- Networking opportunities with faculty, staff, and alumni.
- Meet other first year students who may share similar identities, academic and social interests as you.
- Learn about campus and community resources and activities during your first semester.
- Other fun incentives (i.e. T-Shirts, recognition prizes, participation in fun/unique activities on campus and/or Milwaukee community, etc)
How do I apply?
Protégé applications ARE AVAILABLE NOW. Click HERE to apply.
Completed applications are due Friday August 23, 2013.
Once your application is received, you will be notified by OSD - Intercultural Engagement about your status as a Protégé. Reminders and updates will be sent via email and/or to the address you provided in the application.
SAVE THE DATE: Friday August 23, 2013- SUSTAIN: Excellence Mixer (look out for more information during New Student Orientation Week.) This social event will be an opportunity for Protégés to learn more about the program and meet the Mentors in the program.
