O-Fest and Community Service Fairs help kick-start new school year

Students have the opportunity to explore and learn about Marquette's more than 250 student-led organizations Thursday, Aug. 29, at Organization Fest, or O-Fest. Representatives from club sports, religious, political, social, cultural, service and social justice organizations will be staffing tables to answer questions and share information about the groups with which they are involved. The Community Service Fair, held on the same day, will include representatives from nonprofit organizations in Milwaukee seeking student volunteers. As a new semester begins, students should be encouraged to consider new programs and service programs to expand and build upon their academic experience at Marquette.

Career fairs to be held this month

Marquette's Career Services Center will host a series of three career fairs September 25-26. A post graduate service fair will be held Wednesday, Sept. 25, and feature opportunities with nonprofit agencies that provide full-time or long-term service positions after graduation, such as Jesuit Volunteer Corps and Teach for America. That same day, a non-technical career fair will be held, where students can meet with employers in the business, communication, government and non-profit areas. On Thursday, Sept. 26, employers in technical fields, including engineering, computer science and information technology, will be on campus to meet with students.

The Career Services Center has resources to help student prepare for career fairs and counselors available to help students through the job search process. Walk-in assistance is available daily, Monday through Friday, noon to 2 p.m., on a first-come, first-served basis. These 15 minute sessions are good for brief resumé critiques, questions about MU Career Manager or brief interviewing assistance.

Study Abroad Fair is Sept. 6

Students considering studying abroad should attend the Office of International Education's Study Abroad Fair Friday, Sept. 6. Program representatives and study abroad alumni will share why hundreds of Marquette student study abroad each semester. In addition to the one-day event, the Office of International Education will offer program-specific information sessions throughout September.

All students planning to study abroad this spring need to have applications completed by Oct. 1. General application requirements include completing an online form, submitting an essay and soliciting letter(s) of recommendation.

Student Government and Residence Hall Association provide leadership opportunities

Marquette University Student Government and Residence Hall Association will hold elections for a variety of student governance leadership positions on Sept. 12. Both organizations provide students with opportunities to develop their leadership skills while serving as a voice for other students.

Marquette welcomes new arts and sciences dean

On July 1, Marquette welcomed Dr. Richard C. Holz, dean of Klingler College of Arts and Sciences, to campus. Holz joined Marquette after serving as the associate dean for resources and planning at Loyola University Chicago, where he also served as the chair of the department of chemistry for five years.

2013-14 Parent Calendar available to download

The 2013-14 Marquette Parent Calendar is available online to download and print. The calendar contains important dates and deadlines, and is a useful resource for Marquette families throughout the academic year.

Reaffirmation of Marquette's accreditation

Marquette University is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission through the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. To remain accredited, the university needs to complete a reaffirmation of accreditation process to document the work and processes of the university, provide assurance that we are meeting and exceeding the expectations of various constituencies, and identify both strengths and opportunities for improvement. As part of that process, The Higher Learning Commission is accepting third-party comments from the public regarding Marquette's performance through Sept. 1. The reaffirmation process culminates with a site visit Sept. 30 to Oct. 2.

Students attend World Youth Day in Brazil

Twelve Marquette student traveled to Brazil to attend World Youth Days. Organized through Campus Ministry, the students completed a six-day Magis pilgrimage with students from Jesuit institutions around the world. Senior Jessie Bazan, reflected on her journey with Marquette Magazine.

Family Weekend Oct. 4-6; registration opens Aug. 28

Take a weekend to step into the life of your Marquette student. Join us Oct. 5-7 for Family Weekend 2013. Three days of activities are planned for parents and siblings, including "Meet the College" sessions, theatre performances and family bowling. Online registration opens Thursday, Aug. 28.
