Advising Week, Oct 31 - Nov. 4

Every semester Marquette takes a week for students to meet with their academic advisers. Advising is an important part of a student's success, whether the student is a freshman or senior. Parents can ask if students have scheduled time with their advisers and if they are prepared with questions.

All students are assigned an adviser for the college in which they are enrolled. Students are required to meet with their adviser once a semester before registering for next-semester courses. Each college handles this a little differently, so students are encouraged to check their Marquette e-mail accounts for more information and to read the Undergraduate Bulletin, which describes the expectations for advisers and advisees.

While course scheduling and registration are important components of advising, students are encouraged to speak with their advisers about educational and career goals — and some strategies for achieving both. While each adviser/advisee relationship is different, ideally advising is an ongoing, collaborative relationship that helps students enhance their Marquette experience.

NEWS FOR PARENTS

Vacant House Watch

Students living off campus can register their properties with the Department of Public Safety for Vacant House Watch while they are away from campus during the Thanksgiving and winter breaks. DPS officers will discreetly monitor the property periodically during their routine patrols of the neighborhood.

Students must fill out the Vacant House Watch form and return it to the DPS office in Parking Structure 1, on 16th Street. Students are also encouraged to discontinue mail and newspaper service over extended absences and to activate alarm systems if they are available.

Shuttle to train and bus station for Thanksgiving break

Public Safety will provide shuttles to the Amtrak and Greyhound/Megabus stations for Thanksgiving break. Shuttles will run every hour, on the hour, Tuesday, Nov. 22, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., leaving from the DPS office in Parking Structure 1 on 16th Street. Starting at 5 p.m., students can request a ride to the Amtrak or bus terminal using the LIMO service, which runs until 3 a.m. LIMO service will also be available on Sunday, Nov. 27, from 5 p.m. to 3 a.m., to get students from the train and bus stations back to campus. LIMO requests are made by calling DPS at (414) 288-6363. No reservation or notice is needed for the hourly shuttle on Tuesday. Whether using the shuttle or LIMO service, students should plan ahead as departure and pick-up times cannot be guaranteed.

Video: Engineering Hall open for business

The Marquette University College of Engineering celebrated the opening of its new $50 million facility, Engineering Hall, on Friday, Oct. 7. The building is the first of a two-part initiative, with a 135,000-square-foot, $50 million second phase addition already designed and fundraising underway. The building is already winning praise for its unique structure and creative design, described as a living laboratory that puts engineering principles on display and will help prepare the engineers of tomorrow.

More than 2,200 parents, siblings and friends enjoyed the weekend, which featured performances of Little Shop of Horrors, tours of Milwaukee and opportunities for families to meet with their students' deans and professors. Mark your calendar for next year's Family Weekend, Oct. 5-7, 2012.

Admission deadline, Dec. 1

For all of its academic programs, Marquette has a priority admission and Ignatius Scholarship deadline of Dec. 1 (postmark/submit date). Applications completed after Dec. 1 will be considered on a space-available basis for admission and scholarship. Admission decisions begin rolling out from Marquette in February.

Parents Association basketball game, Feb. 11

Mark your calendar for this annual gathering when the men's basketball team takes on Cincinnati for National Marquette Day. A block of tickets has been reserved for the Parents Association and are available for $22 each. Pre-game plans are still in the works, but parents are encouraged to purchase tickets for the game as soon as possible. Winning seasons continue

It has been a banner year for Marquette men's and women's soccer and women's volleyball. The three teams have a combined 24-2-0 record in Big East Conference play and hold at least a share of first place in their respective divisions. The women's soccer team, ranked No. 5 in the nation, won its third-consecutive Big East American Division Championship and will play host to Notre Dame at 1 p.m. this Sunday at Valley Fields. The men's soccer team needs to win just one of its remaining two matches — tonight at No. 1 Connecticut or Saturday vs. Pittsburgh at Valley Fields — to clinch first place in the Big East Blue Division.

Women's volleyball, meanwhile, is 8-0 in conference and in sole possession of first place with six matches left to play. The Golden Eagles will return home on Nov. 11 for a match with Notre Dame before ending the regular season vs. DePaul on Nov. 13. Marquette will then host the 2011 Big East Volleyball Championship on Nov. 18-20 at the McGuire Center.

The men's and women's basketball seasons begin November 11 and 12, respectively, and tickets are available now on a single-game basis. For more information, visit GoMarquette.com.
