| Public safety offers Vacant House Watch
Does your son or daughter live off campus? Marquette’s Department of Public Safety monitors houses and apartments in the near-campus neighborhood while students are home on break. To register, students should use this form. Read about the Vacant House Watch program online.

Shuttles available for Amtrak and Greyhound/Megabus holiday travel
Student Safety Programs will provide shuttles from the 16th Street Parking Structure to the Amtrak and Greyhound/Megabus stations for Christmas break. Hourly shuttles will run beginning at 10 a.m. and every hour on the hour thereafter Friday, Dec. 14; students must arrive with their luggage and be ready to board the shuttle in the Public Safety reception area. Shuttle service is also available during normal LIMO hours, 5 p.m.–3 a.m., the last two days of Christmas break, Saturday, Jan. 12, and Sunday, Jan. 13. To request pick-ups, students should call SSP at (414) 288-6363. Please be aware that SSP staff coverage could be light Jan. 12.

Residence hall closings and openings
In anticipation of Christmas break, all residence halls will close at 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15. The halls will reopen at 9 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 12. For more information on residence halls, visit the Office of Residence Life.

Engineering professor is Wisconsin Professor of the Year
Marquette engineering professor Kristina Ropella, who chairs the College of Engineering’s Biomedical Engineering Department, was named Wisconsin Professor of the Year, making it two years in a row that Marquette professors have received the honor. In 2006, it was Marquette physical therapy professor Don Neumann. Read the full story.

Kerns make personal gift for proposed building
What will it take to educate the engineers of the 21st century? Thanks to a $15 million gift made by Robert and Patricia Kern for a proposed new building, the College of Engineering is closer to its goal of transforming engineering education. Read the news release.

Gift to endow business deanship
James H. Keyes, retired CEO and chairman of the board of Johnson Controls, announced a gift of $7.2 million gift to Marquette University to fund the deanship in the College of Business Administration. The university has launched a national search for a new business dean to succeed Dr. David Shrock, who will retire after serving as interim provost beginning Jan. 1, 2008. Read the news release.

Couple donates building to Les Aspin Center
Since 1996, Robert and Jacqueline (Arts ’60) Lewis have rented their Washington, D.C., apartment building to Marquette for use as student housing for its Les Aspin Center for Government. This fall, the Lewises generously donated the building to the university, making their announcement at the Aspin Center's annual Democracy Award dinner in D.C. The six-unit building is just four blocks from the U.S. Capitol and across the street from the Aspin Center offices and classrooms.

School of Dentistry opens community clinic
In continuing its strong commitment to serving Milwaukee families, the Marquette University School of Dentistry opened its new Parkway Clinic in the Sixteenth Street Community Health Center on the city’s south side. The clinic is staffed by faculty and supervised dental students. Read the news release.

Mark your calendar for On the Issues
Marquette Law School’s On the Issues series, hosted by Mike Gousha, distinguished fellow in law and public policy, has scheduled its first two guests for spring semester. Events are free and open to the public, but you must reserve your spot online.
Gousha interviews The Hon. Michael Gableman, candidate for the Wisconsin Supreme Court, on Tuesday, Jan. 15, from 12:15 p.m.–1:15 p.m., in the Law School, Room 325.
On Wednesday, Feb. 6, Edward J. Zore, president and CEO of Northwestern Mutual, joins Gousha noon–1p.m. in the Law School’s Eisenberg Hall.

Join AMUW book club in reading best-selling novel
The Association of Marquette University Women invites you to its book club. Alumnae will meet 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, in the Rev. John P. Raynor, S.J., Library, Beaumier Suite, lower level. The book club is currently reading national best-selling novel Moloka’I by Alan Brennert. Sports report: Men and women’s basketball
After a successful run through the non-conference season, Coach Tom Crean’s nationally ranked Golden Eagles are gearing up for the Big East Conference season. Holiday packs, including tickets to games against Louisville and Pittsburgh or DePaul and Rutgers, are currently on sale. Following a convincing 67-53 win over the rival Wisconsin Badgers in front of a record Marquette crowd, Coach Terri Mitchell’s squad is also poised to make a run through the Big East. It’s also a Family Fun Night: with the purchase of a $4 ticket, fans get a voucher for a free soda and hot dog.
