Athletic Director announcement

Dec. 5, 2011

Dear Marquette Faculty and Staff:

I am pleased to inform you that Larry Williams has been appointed Vice President and Director of Athletics. He will begin at Marquette January 2, 2012, reporting directly to me. The full news release on his appointment can be found here: http://www.marquette.edu/omc/newscenter/12-05-2011-williams.php

Currently the Athletic Director at the University of Portland, Larry brings outstanding experience to our university community. His accomplishments at Portland combine academic excellence with athletic competitiveness and student success. Under his leadership, Portland steadily improved academic performance by student-athletes, achieving high levels of success in overall academic progress by student-athletes, and some remarkable academic accomplishments, including a Rhodes Scholar finalist, Fulbright Scholarship winners, and numerous Academic All-American recognitions. Student-athletes also achieved a national championship in women's soccer and the university's first-ever national ranking for men's basketball, baseball, and tennis. Most importantly, Larry's personal and professional success is rooted in principles and values characteristic of the Marquette community: an abiding faith, a deep sense of ethics and integrity, and leadership expressed in service to others.

Dean of Nursing Margaret Callahan and Matt Mitten, Professor of Law and Director of the National Sports Law Institute, both of whom served on the Search Committee alongside Trustee Doc Rivers and Search Committee Chair Allie McGuire, deserve our thanks as a university community for their work on this search. In addition, more than 100 people, including representatives of the Faculty Athletic Board, University Academic Senate, University Leadership Council, Marquette University Student Government, Student Athlete Advisory Council, and other members of the Marquette community, gave input into the key characteristics and qualifications of the new Athletic Director.

I want to extend a special thank you to Mike Broeker, deputy athletic director, who has served as the acting athletic director since July and who has provided outstanding leadership to the department during a critical and challenging transition period. His commitment to our student-athletes and our university has contributed greatly to our success and have positioned Marquette positively for the future. He will resume his role as deputy athletic director as of January 2, with my gratitude.

Please join me in welcoming Larry Williams, his wife Laura Lee Williams, and the entire Williams family to the Marquette community.

Scott R. Pilarz, S.J.
President
