Second semester updates

Dear Students,
Welcome to Marquette for what promises to be a very memorable 2013 at the university. It is tremendous to have you back on campus.
While the semester is still young, I want to direct your attention to several important events in the life of the university this winter.
• With the four finalists for the position of dean of the College of Arts and Sciences set to visit campus starting this week, Marquette is on the verge of selecting a candidate for this important position. I encourage you to take advantage of opportunities to hear the candidates speak and to ask them questions.
• The second item concerns planning for the future. As you know, the Marquette community is involved in a university-wide strategic planning effort — and we could use your help. I will host an interactive workshop Wednesday, Jan. 30, to involve faculty, staff and students in the next step of the planning process: generating ideas for the concrete goals that will bring the plan into focus. This work on goals builds on strategic planning themes that have been newly revised based on feedback from the university community. Please respond to the invitation for the President’s Strategic Planning Workshop so this blueprint for Marquette’s future will benefit from your perspective. Your contributions at the workshop will help shape the goals presented to Marquette’s Board of Trustees in early March, with the drafting of the full plan coming by the end of the semester.
• As part of this year’s Mission Week, Marquette has the rare opportunity to honor the 10 recipients of the Opus Prize, the international award for the world’s foremost faith-based social innovators. Marquette first hosted the annual Opus Prize selection process and ceremony in 2005, and the celebration of the program’s 10th anniversary here will bring many of the program’s celebrated award winners to campus, an ideal complement to Mission Week’s annual exploration of faith and mission in our university community and world.

Rev. Robert A. Wild, S.J., to serve as interim president
The Board of Trustees has chosen Rev. Robert A. Wild, S.J., to lead Marquette University as interim president. Wild, who served as president of Marquette from 1996 to 2011, will take over for Rev. Scott R. Pilarz, S.J., who announced on Sept. 20, that after 10 years as a university president at Marquette University and the University of Scranton, he was resigning to pursue other apostolic opportunities.
Father Pilarz will assist Father Wild with the transition, while traveling back and forth to the East coast to care for his ailing father, which he noted in a letter to the Marquette community on Sept. 25. Father Wild is concluding his duties with the Wisconsin Province and will take over as interim president on Oct. 16.
Wild will serve as interim president until August 2014. A new permanent president is expected to be in place for the 2014-15 academic year.
