Strategic Planning Preliminary Feedback
May 15, 2012
Dear Members of the Marquette Community,
Before the curtain falls on this semester, I want to be sure to express my gratitude for your contributions to a fine academic year at Marquette University. In your hunger for knowledge, drive for excellence, and concern for making a difference in the world, you and your fellow members of this community do so much to make me proud to be one of you.
I also appreciate the time so many of you gave throughout my first year at Marquette to help improve my understanding of this remarkable university. Indeed, highlights of the year were the many faculty dinners, 17 strategic planning listening sessions, two student forums, and countless one-on-one and small-group meetings devoted to listening and learning with members of this community. Thank you for sharing your ideas for meeting Marquette’s challenges and your hopes and ambitions for promoting its greater excellence.
As the next step in the process of creating Marquette’s new strategic plan, we have compiled a summary of the comments I heard at the 17 listening sessions. You can find it at www.marquette.edu/president/documents/strategic-planning-preliminary-feedback.pdf, on the President’s Office website. As you read it, keep in mind that this is essentially unvarnished: I am reporting back to you what I heard and am asking you to let me know if I heard you correctly. You can do so by sending your comments on the summary document to strategicplanning@marquette.edu.
Work on the actual plan will begin in the fall semester, with a goal of bringing a final version to the Board of Trustees in May 2013 for their approval. Please take advantage of this opportunity to provide feedback, and know that there will be additional opportunities for input in the year ahead.
This is an exciting time of year with students and faculty preparing for service trips and summer research opportunities and our graduating seniors launching the next phase of their lives as change agents and citizens of the world. In these and all of your endeavors ahead, I wish you God’s grace and the support and care of the entire Marquette family.
Best regards,
Scott R. Pilarz, S.J.
President
Marquette University
Office of
the President
Rev. Robert A. Wild, S.J., to serve as interim president
The Board of Trustees has chosen Rev. Robert A. Wild, S.J., to lead Marquette University as interim president. Wild, who served as president of Marquette from 1996 to 2011, will take over for Rev. Scott R. Pilarz, S.J., who announced on Sept. 20, that after 10 years as a university president at Marquette University and the University of Scranton, he was resigning to pursue other apostolic opportunities.
Father Pilarz will assist Father Wild with the transition, while traveling back and forth to the East coast to care for his ailing father, which he noted in a letter to the Marquette community on Sept. 25. Father Wild is concluding his duties with the Wisconsin Province and will take over as interim president on Oct. 16.
Wild will serve as interim president until August 2014. A new permanent president is expected to be in place for the 2014-15 academic year.
