From the President

Since classes first began at Marquette in 1881, our university has been dedicated to providing higher education marked by the constant pursuit of intellectual excellence, explicit attention to religious faith and moral values, the encouragement and development of leadership skills and the creation of an ethos among all our members of service to others, especially the poor and the marginalized in our society. We want to help our students become leaders in our contemporary world, exemplary in their chosen academic and professional fields, but also marked in their personal and professional lives by the Jesuit values we shared with them.

To remain faithful to this heritage and to achieve our goals, we first and foremost depend upon talented and dedicated faculty members. Throughout our history, we have succeeded in attracting and retaining such men and women, and I am pleased that you are a member of our Marquette community. Certainly I thank you for the countless ways in which you enable the university, amid our vibrant and challenging urban environment, to provide quality undergraduate, graduate, and professional education in an atmosphere of care and faith.

You will find this handbook will be a helpful source for answering questions you may have about Marquette University and its policies, and it is meant as yet another means to assist you in making your work here satisfying and productive. May God bless all of us abundantly in our commitment to the advancement of knowledge within our respective disciplines and to the young men and women whose lives we will help shape in a positive way both inside and outside the classroom.

Sincerely,

Scott R. Pilarz, S.J.
