Description
The Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Clinic is a specialty clinic of the Center for Psychological Services at Marquette University. The clinic is directed by Dr. Alyson Gerdes, a licensed psychologist and associate professor, and is staffed by doctoral students in the clinical psychology program. The clinic works on a sliding-fee scale and is committed to working with underserved populations.
Goals
The goals of the ADHD Clinic include:
- Providing state-of-the-art assessment and treatment to school-aged children and teens with ADHD,
- Conducting research to advance our knowledge about ADHD and the best ways to treat it, and
- Training clinical psychology doctoral students.
Services Provided
The ADHD Clinic offers behavior modification and friendship-building treatments that have been shown through research to be effective in treating ADHD. These include:
- Parent training for school-aged children, which involves providing parents with additional tools for dealing with a challenging child and for structuring the home environment to help their child function better.
- School interventions for school-aged children, which involve assisting teachers in developing a simple behavioral program in the classroom to improve the child’s behavior and performance.
- The Program for the Evaluation and Enrichment of Relational Skills (PEERS) for teens, which focuses on helping teens learn skills that will allow them to make and keep friends. Click here for more information.
In addition, Dr. Gerdes offers in-service training to schools, parent groups, and mental health clinics on topics related to the assessment and treatment of ADHD and related problems.
