Ed de St. Aubin, Ph.D.
Teaching/Research Interests

Teaching Interests

Dr. de St. Aubin teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in Developmental Psychology (Childhood and Adolescence, Adult Development and Aging, Life Span), Personality Psychology, Research Methods, Human Sexuality, The Psychology of Culture, and The Narrative Self.

Research Interests

Dr. de St. Aubin was trained as an interdisciplinary scholar in the study of the developing human being.  His general interests include the expression of personality in the various phases of the life course as determined by the interplay of biology (e.g., sex, evolution, emotions, neurophysiology) and environment (e.g., social institutions, family dynamics, historical period).  Dr. de St. Aubin's scholarly efforts have primarily focused on three areas:  1) GENERATIVITY, an emerging need in adulthood to achieve symbolic immortality through investments of self into the creation and well-being of younger individuals and future generations; 2) PERSONAL IDEOLOGY, one's belief based philosophy of how life should be lived and of what forces impact human living (includes religiousness, morality, values, political orientation, parenting styles, and assumptions concerning human nature); and, 3) NARRATIVE as both an aspect of identity (one's self defining life story) and as a research method (the analysis of stories).
