Course and Section Numbering


Catalog Numbers/Course Numbers

Courses at Marquette are assigned a catalog number and the number indicates the education level of the course.

Catalog Numbers Educational Level
1 to 99 Undergraduate — Lower Division
Usually taken by freshmen and sophomores
100 to 199 Undergraduate — Upper Division
Usually taken by juniors and seniors
200 to 299 Graduate School — Master's Level
300 to 399 Graduate School — Doctoral Level
400 to 599 Professional — Dental, Law and Health Professional

NOTE: Certain upper-division undergraduate courses can carry graduate credit.



Course Section Numbers

A course section is a specific instance of a course that meets on certain days at a specific time and place. Course sections are identified by a four-digit section number.

Section Numbers Assigned to...
1001 to 1699 Weekday morning or afternoon classes held on Marquette's campus
1701 to 1799 Evening or weekend classes held on Marquette's campus
1801 to 1899 Online classes
1901 to 1999 Classes held off-campus
