Fall Semester:
Your journey with the Dorothy Day Social Justice Living Learning Community will kick off with site orientations during the first two weeks of school. The following week, all participants (regardless of enrollment in Fr. Flaherty’s Philosophy of Human Nature course) will begin their Service Learning at an off-campus site in the Milwaukee area. A one day retreat September 7 provides an opportunity to become familiar with other participants and begin to understand a shared definition of social justice that the DDSJ community works toward. These placements will be continued throughout the entire year. In the fall, you will be expected to do 30 hours of Service Learning, which breaks down into 3 hours per week. While working with your agencies in the fall, you will be given the opportunity to learn from the community, and also begin to identify some needs within the populations you are interacting with.
End of Fall Semester:
After taking into account both what you have learned from the clients at your agencies and identifying some needs within the agencies, you and your fellow DDSJLLC members working at your site will need to begin meeting to form a plan for an action-oriented project. This project could be anything from planning an event for the clients at your site, creating an advocacy campaign regarding an issue you have seen your site grappling with, or even an on-campus event raising awareness about a particular issue. Feel free to get creative! You will have plenty of resources ready to assist you in this endeavor. A plan for your project will be due at the end of the semester and will account for a portion of your grade.
