Description of Agency/Activities: WEOP’s missionis to prepare youth and adults to pursue higher educational opportunities by providing college and career readiness programs, resources, and support.GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) is designed to assist low income students succeed in secondary school so that they will graduate from high school and pursue higher education. In 2011, Governor Scott Walker designed the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction Wisconsin Educational Opportunity Program (WEOP) as the sole state agency to administer the GEAR UP grant. The GEAR UP grant is funded through the United States Department of Education.

Objectives: The objectives of the program are listed below:

Student Role in Agency: Under the direct supervision of a GEAR UP Education Specialist, service learners will work hands-on with high school students grades 9 – 10 in completing homework, staying organized, studying for tests and becoming college and career ready. Occasionally, the service learner may be required to lead small group sessions geared towards being successful in high school. We are looking for volunteers to help out for two hours after school once per week.
