Description of Agency/Activities: A quality improvement program to prevent older patients from experiencing a decline in both their physical and mental health during their hospital stay. HELP provides personal care for seniors to support and encourage independence. HELP’s main goal is to prevent delirium (acute confusion) in these patients.

Student Role in Agency: Visit bedside with patients aged 70 years and older to address special needs of the patients. Volunteers will provide companionship, assist with meals, play games, reminisce, and assist with mobility if able. Volunteer will encourage the patient to remain alert, on track with eating and sleeping routines, and stay mobile and engaged in the world around them.

Commitment: Students must fill out volunteer packet before beginning service (this includes a TB test). In addition, students must first attend an orientation and shadow a volunteer for 3-hour slots, and Wheaton St. Francis asks that students must be available to SERVE FOR 6 MONTHS.
