Description of Agency: The One on One Program matches urban middle school students with caring adult mentors recruited from Marquette University and the local community. Mentors serve as role models, coaches, and friends as they help their students develop their fullest academic and personal potential.  Mentors meet with their students once a week after school at supervised sites throughout the city, including sites at the Downtown YMCA.  Most of the One on One sites use a research-based literacy curriculum called Scholastic Read XL.This curriculum is individualized for each student and helps them to achieve major improvements in reading. Students learn important life skills, such as goal setting, as they work towards improving their reading levels or GPAs.

Student Role in Agency: One on One Program Service Learners serve as mentors.  This is a great option for students looking to gain skills working in an academically focused mentoring/tutoring program with minority and under-privileged students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds.

Commitment: An initial 1.5-hour orientation session conducted on Thursday, February 10th and a weekly service commitment of 1.75 hours (arrive 15 minutes before the start of the 1.5 hour mentoring session).  Service Learners need to commit to attending each mentoring session up until the end date of their specific site (listed above).  Mentors are required to complete and submit a mentoring application/background check. This form is available at Sign-Up Night, or online at Submit the application ASAP, but NO LATER than February 2nd; otherwise your placement will be terminated.
