Description of Agency/Activities: Alliance Française de Milwaukee (AF) is "the gateway to the French-speaking world." It is an independent chapter of an international organization promoting the use and appreciation of French language, and Francophone culture through education, cultural programs, social events, and information resources. AF was founded in 1918, and in 1982 received nonprofit status. It is located in the commercial district of Shorewood. AF has over 500 members. Fifty percent of the staff is from Francophone countries including France, Switzerland, Senegal, Lebanon, Martinique, and Quebec. AF offers over 45 classes each semester for adults and children interested in learning French. Topics range from grammar, conversation, business French, music, wine, travel, and cooking. AF also offers informal weekly discussion groups for people who would like to converse in French.

Student Role in Agency: Projects where Service Learners are needed include:

Unique Features of the Agency: This is one of the only service learning sites where doing administrative support work is acceptable, because it gives you the opportunity to be exposed to the language. Not everything you do will be in French, but there is definitely the opportunity to speak and listen to a lot of French at this site. While the majority of the clientele is English speaking, the staff welcomes the opportunity to speak French to each other, and to Service Learners. Service Learners will need to seek out opportunities where they can use and practice their language skills. Service Learners are encouraged to sign up in groups of two or three.

Commitment: Orientation at the site plus 2-3 hours per week for the duration of the semester.
