The mission of Children's Hospital spells "CARE."

Advocacy - speaking up and protecting children.

Research - finding cures to the illnesses that affect children.

Education - sharing what we learn and teaching others to care for kids.

Student Role in Agency:

Physical Therapy Program: Students who are majoring in Physical Therapy have the option to work one-on-one with Physical and Occupational Therapists in the PT/OT Center. Students will be able to partner with a therapist, and also will perform additional duties as needed. All Service Learners are also able to volunteer in different departments, but that is an addition to the Service Learning commitment of 2 hours per week. The additional opportunities are held to a 6-month commitment, beyond the scope of the academic semester.

Emergency Room Program: Service Learners will be assisting in the Emergency Room of Children's Hospital. Service Learners will be able to assist intake nurses and should be prepared to be very busy while at the agency. Service Learners will gain a broad understanding of how ERs function and serve clients on a daily basis.

Commitment/Requirements: Students must complete a 2.5 hour orientation, plus 2 hours per week for the duration of the semester. Students who choose to do Service Learning at Children's must have 2 TB tests performed (one can be done at the Service Learning TB Test Clinic, and the other can be done at Children's). Students also must fill out a volunteer application, complete a background check, submit their childhood MMR records (available through Student Health Services), and participate in an interview. Students must also return to Children's to get a photo taken for an ID badge. Finally, when doing service learning students must wear closed-toe shoes, no jeans, a professional top, and a hospital-issued jacket. Service Learning will hold a 2-day TB Test Clinic on campus. The Student Health Services fee for this test is $5, made payable by cash or check.
