By Car: Take Wisconsin Ave. west to 16th St. Take a right onto 16th St. 16th St. becomes Renee St., which becomes 17th St. Take 17th St. to Fond du Lac and turn left. Continue on and the destination will be on the right.

Description of Agency/Activities: Hmong American Women's Association (HAWA), Inc. was founded in 1993 by a group of thirteen women who had a strong passion to advocate, organize, and identify the needs of Hmong women. The mission of HAWA is to assist Hmong women and girls to meet the needs of Hmong families, assist in accommodation of mainstream American lifestyle, promote education and maintain the appreciation of the unique Hmong culture. In order to achieve this mission, a focus is placed on the following target areas: self-respect/positive self-image, leadership, strong family values and relationships, and strong cultural values. HAWA's innovative programs include: (1) Teen legacy circle project, (2) "Noj Zoo, Nyob Zoo" (eat well, live well) health promotion program, (3) "Sib Pab Tu" worker's association, and (4) Paj Ntaub Circle, women working together to tackle community problems.
Student Role in Agency: Service learners will have the opportunity to work with Hmong women, girls, and refugee families through various program activities with the supervision of their Program Coordinators. They will serve as mentors for the Teen Legacy Circle (TLC). As mentors, they will be a contributing factor to the success of the program. Service learners will be responsible for exemplifying the principles of the TLC programming through their interaction with an assigned participant. Each of these participants will have individual needs, but overall, they will ultimately look to the mentor for guidance and support. Service learners will also learn how to document stories and testimonies from individuals. They will have the opportunity to work one-on-one with recent refugees in helping them learn "conversational ESL (English as a Second Language)."
Commitment: Service Learners are needed 2 hours per week for the duration of the semester.
