Description of Agency/Activities: The Keefe After School Enrichment Program is housed inside Incarnation Lutheran Church, and is a program of Lutheran Social Services. The objective of the Keefe After School Program is to assist students, ages 5-11, with learning retention. By using educational activities to spark children's interest in academics, and by providing a safe, stable, and positive environment for their students, the program hopes to improve the children's academic performance in school. Students will meet these objectives by working with tutors in small groups and spending time working specifically on reading skills. In addition, the program will offer various activities, such as field trips, art projects, science experiments, computer time, presentations from outside groups, and creative programming that will engage the students in active learning and opportunities to build their self esteem. The program has an open door policy for parents, who are invited to join their students at the program at anytime. As the program continues to develop, they hope to offer programming specifically for the parents of the participants.

Student Role in Agency: Marquette Service Learning students have the opportunity to serve as tutors and mentors to the students who participate in this program. This will include some one-on-one tutoring opportunities, listening to the younger students as they read books out loud, etc. The program manager for the program would really like Service Learners to help plan mini-lessons, for example, plan an art project, help to facilitate a group session on a particular issue, plan activities etc. Service Learners are encouraged to be creative and take initiative. This is an excellent site for education students who want to work with a diverse population and have the opportunity to plan and implement lesson plans and curriculum. Spanish students are encouraged to sign up for the Koininia Learning Center site. It gives the Service Learners a chance to use their Spanish skills to help bilingual students.

Commitment: Following Orientation, 2-3 hours a week for the duration of the semester.
