Description: The mission of the Latino Community Center (LCC) is to meet and respect youth and families where they are – re-empowering them to change their negative situations into positive personal, academic and professional outcomes through programs that strengthen their abilities and aspirations.

The Latino Community Center has been honored to serve young people and residents throughout the City of Milwaukee. We are committed to re-empowering our people through programs that include education, recreation, technology, and environmental awareness. In addition, we provide programming that addresses issues related to crime, drug abuse and violence. We have incorporated innovative techniques that attracts over 1,800 youth each year. Our efforts include a Street Outreach Initiative that searches for those that have been mislead to negative lifestyles. Our Outreach efforts also include local schools, other nonprofits and churches. LCC's strength is the staff's ability to tap into any individual's struggle and fill the void that could be missing. This allows opportunities for personal/professional success.

Student Role at Agency:
Community Learning Centers (CLC) – Service Learners are needed as teaching assistants and teachers for CLC youth. Service Learners will assist CLC staff in facilitating and moderating after-school activities as well. Each weekday, homework help and after-school activities including arts & crafts, cultural activities, computer time, nutrition & health, recreation, field trips, and other fun, safe activities are offered at Kagel Elementary and South Division High schools. Over 120 children from the Albert E. Kagel Elementary School take part in CLC after-school activities led by LCC staff. First, the youth spend 1-1/2 hours doing homework at the school, then they walk across the street (accompanied by LCC staff) to they agency. CLC activities increase the children’s academic achievement, provide alternative to being home alone, and connect kids to other community resources.

Commitment/ Requirements: A volunteer application must be completed and brought with the student to orientation. A Background Check is also required and is to be brought to orientation. Students must also complete Marquette's Working with Minors Training. Orientation and consistent attendance are mandatory - Service Learners must work 2 hours each week.
