Description of Agency and Activities: Loyola Academy is a small high school that operates as a partnership with the Milwaukee Public Schools and with the Council for the Spanish Speaking, a respected community organization that provides housing, education and social service support to Milwaukee’s Latino community. Loyola’s mission is to provide "at-risk" youth an opportunity to earn a high school diploma. The Academy works to develop their students into academically successful and highly employable young people who enjoy learning and want to further their education by pursuing higher educational opportunities. Loyola focuses on an early college curriculum and enables students to earn dual credit at MATC. Currently about 90 students attend the academy, and 92% of the students are Latino.

Student Role in Agency: Tutors/In-Class Assistants: Service learners are needed to work one-on-one with students who need extra support and assistance in certain subject areas. Service learners are also needed to assist in classrooms by helping the teacher and students with classroom activities. Service learners may also have other opportunities to engage in activities with the students, including developing a greenhouse and accompanying students to Milwaukee Area Technical College's career classes.

Loyola Academy is committed to helping their students be successful after graduation. They are very interested in exposing their students to the college environment. Opportunities may exist for Service Learners to help set up tours of Marquette's campus for small groups of high school students, hosting Loyola students for special programming opportunities on campus, MU students could present on career planning, resume building, interviewing, etc.

Commitment: Orientation, and 2 hours a week for the duration of the semester. Background check is required before service can begin. Interested service learners should be prepared to fill out a background check form when they sign up.
