Pan African Community Association (PACA)

Days/Hours of Operation:

Description of Agency/Activities: Established in 2007, the Pan African Community Association began as a non-profit organization that centered on providing support, resources, and services to recent African refugees and immigrants. According to the Executive Director of the program, there are nearly 7,000 to 10,000 African immigrants living in the Milwaukee area. PACA recently began a branch on the south side of Milwaukee to serve South East Asian immigrants and refugees. One of the association’s main goals is to provide its clients with support as they make a smooth transition to American Society, while preserving and maintaining their African or Asian cultural values and beliefs. As a result of the transition to the Milwaukee area, many immigrants and refugees face challenges including cultural misunderstandings and lack of communication abilities with school and community officials, making it difficult to find necessary resources. To assist these individuals, PACA holds tutoring classes for approximately 30 grade school and high school students and also assists African and South East Asian immigrants with educational, housing, and other needs.

Student Role in Agency: Service Learners working with the Pan African Community Association will have the opportunity to tutor African and South East Asian refugee and immigrant students, grades one through twelve, and assist the students as they become more confident with their educational skills. Service learners should be prepared to do the following:

Commitment: Service Learners must complete an orientation at the beginning of the semester, a short application, complete Marquette's Working with Minors training online, and attend a cultural competency workshop held at the agency. A two or three hour commitment each week is required throughout the semester.
