Description of Agency/Activities: Voces de la Frontera is celebrating its 10th Anniversary this year. It has provided 10 years of dedicated leadership to immigrant, worker & civil rights. Onsite is a low-wage and immigrant worker's center that opened in Nov. 2001. The center was created to respond to the immediate problems low-wage immigrant workers face. The center provides a legal clinic where workers can obtain free legal advice about labor and civil rights, as well as ongoing English language and citizenship classes. The YES program is its youth group, which aims to promote awareness and advocacy on both high school and college campuses.

Student Role in Agency: Students will become engaged in the YES program and Voces de la Frontera at large by attending weekly meetings. The student’s primary role will be in the high school education program. Students will visit local high schools to educate and inform students of immigration issues. This role will focus on youth leadership development, organizing, and educational presenting.

Special Features: It is not required that Service Learners speak Spanish, but in order to work directly with the Spanish-speaking community, it is highly beneficial.

**Please note that this placement requires Service Learners who are independent and passionate workers. Voces provides a great opportunity for leadership and community, and students with initiative and dedication will be the most successful**

Commitment/Requirement: Individual orientations plus 2-3 hours per week during the semester. Be sure to start right away. It is not required that Service Learners at Voces de la Frontera know Spanish, but it is highly beneficial if service learners expect to work directly with the public. Students need to be prepared to be challenged and to speak a great deal of Spanish.
