Congratulations, Faculty Champions!
Adopting a 3:2:1 Champions goal, Marquette seeks three student-, and two faculty-, champions for social innovation in every one college, furthering the Initiative’s cross-campus, inter-disciplinary approach.
Faculty Champions will:
- Learn about new social innovation developments in their field(s)
- Explain the fundamental concepts of social innovation when asked
- Assist interested parties in finding resources that deepen their understanding
- Devote time to continuously improving the social-innovation ecosystem at Marquette
Why are Faculty Champions important? Because successful, engaged learning often starts with the willingness of faculty to capture student imagination, equipping students with the knowledge they need to embark on a fulfilling life-journey (“tool for learning”) and encouraging students’ passions and interests to be agents of positive social change (“framework for life”).
Why are Marquette faculty well-suited to the task? Ninety-three percent of faculty surveyed believe there is high (71%) or very high (22%) alignment between the field of social innovation and Marquette’s Catholic, Jesuit institutional mission & identity, including, of course, a concern for the poor and marginalized. (Survey conducted following the Fall Faculty Institute on Teaching Social Entrepreneurship, December 2010.) Faculty interest is a partial response to student demand: 97-percent of students surveyed (N = 387) are interested (20%) or very interested (77%) in more exposure to social innovation as part of their Marquette experience.
