What is Anthropology?

Interest in anthropology is growing. From 1987 to 1997 the number of anthropology majors increased 109%. In the last two years alone, the number of bachelor’s degrees awarded in anthropology has increased by 56% nationwide.

National Public Radio reports that the World Bank is restructuring and plans to hire fewer economists and more anthropologists to make their projects more relevant and cost-effective. In its Money section, the February 18, 1999 edition of USA Today ran a cover story titled "Hot Asset in Corporate America: Anthropology Degrees." The 1999 edition of Newsweek’s Career and Graduate School Guide lists anthropology as a career track that’s "up" and one of the "hot careers” of the future.
