When students begin school at Marquette, they are often managing their own healthcare for the first time. You, as a parent, can provide valuable information and guidance to your son or daughter to ensure that (s)he takes the right steps to stay healthy.
Before your son or daughter comes to Marquette
- Encourage him/her to complete the Immunization & Tuberculosis Screening Forms online. These forms can be accessed by logging into CheckMarq and selecting the Next Step link. All newly admitted or re-admitted students are required to submit these forms. It is important for your son or daughter to submit these forms as soon as possible, because students who fail to return them within 30 days of the start of their first semester at Marquette will have a hold placed on their registration, which could prevent them from registering for future classes.
- Learn about available clinical services at the Student Health Service, as well as other health resources on the Marquette campus. If campus resources do not address your son or daughter’s needs, please view our list of emergency and after hours care or call Student Health Service at (414) 288-7184 to locate a specialist in the Milwaukee area. *Note: if your son or daughter will need to be under the care of a specialist off-campus, please verify that the specialist is covered by your insurance provider, prior to the start of school.
- If (s)he has a chronic health condition that will need monitoring while on campus, encourage him/her to set-up an appointment with a Student Health Service provider to discuss available services. An appointment can be scheduled by calling (414) 288-7184. A convenient time to schedule such appointments may be when the student is on campus for Preview or Orientation, prior to the start of the school year.
- If (s)he will be covered under a family health insurance plan, make sure that (s)he brings a copy of the insurance card to campus, in case (s)he needs to seek specialty services or afterhours care in the community.
- If (s)he will not be covered under a family health insurance plan while at Marquette, or your family insurance plan provides limited coverage in the Milwaukee area, you may want to consider purchasing the university-sponsored student health insurance plan.
- Although Student Health Service does offer pharmacy services, we are unable to fill prescriptions written by outside providers. Therefore, if your son or daughter currently uses prescription medication, be sure to purchase a large-enough supply to get him/her through until his/her next visit home; or, locate a pharmacy near Marquette where the prescription can be filled. You can call Student Health Service at (414) 288-7184 for a list of nearby pharmacies.
- Help him/her put together a first-aid kit to bring to campus. Suggested items include:
- Bandages for small cuts and scrapes
- Gauze and adhesive tape
- An antiseptic skin cleanser (hydrogen peroxide, Betadine)
- Antibiotic cream or ointment (bacitracin, Neosporin)
- Scissors and tweezers
- Ice pack or chemical cold pack
- ACE bandage for sprains (3 inch for ankle/wrist, 4 inch for knee)
- Pain-reliever (acetaminophen, ibuprofen)
- Antihistamine for itching, stings, or seasonal allergies (Benadryl, Claritin)
- Decongestant (Sudafed)
- Cough expectorant (Robitussin)
- Cough suppressant (Robitussin DM)
- Sore throat lozenges
- Antacid tablets or liquid (preferably) for upset stomach (Maalox, Mylanta)
- Hydrocortisone cream for skin rashes, itching (Cortaid)
Please note that specified brand name medications mentioned are merely suggestions, and may be substituted with comparable generic products.
While your son or daughter is at Marquette, you should know that:
- The Student Health Service is very similar to the primary care clinic that you are accustomed to at home. We operate on an appointment-based system, during business hours (for our current hours, please visit our hours page). Same day appointments are available for acute and urgent care.
- Full-time Marquette undergraduate students are assessed a health fee, each semester, as part of their tuition and fees. This entitles students to unlimited visits to the Student Health Service; there are no visit co-pays. However, additional fees may apply for medications, lab tests, injections, intravenous fluids, vaccines or orthopedic supplies, and will be discussed with the patient at the time of the visit. Any charges incurred should be paid at the time of service by cash, check, Marquette Cash, Visa, MasterCard or bank/credit/debit card. Student Health Service is unable to bill insurance carriers at this time, but students may request reimbursement from their insurance company by submitting an itemized receipt, which can be generated at the time of payment.
- Graduate, professional and part-time undergraduate students may also pay the per-semester health fee at Student Health Service anytime during the semester to access our services. Students not paying the per-semester health fee may still access health services on a fee-for-service basis.
- Students who need after-hours or emergency care have many accessible facilities near the Marquette campus. For a list of nearby urgent cares and emergency rooms, visit our emergency care page. Students are responsible for payment for services obtained at these facilities.
- Student Health Service is restricted from releasing patient information to third parties under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Therefore, patient health information (dates of visit, diagnoses, billing, etc) is confidential and cannot be released to a third party – including parents – without patient authorization. Patients who would like to authorize a third party to receive oral information about their visit to the Student Health Service must sign a Release of Medical Information Form . Patients who would like to authorize a third party to receive paper copies of their medical records must sign a Release of Patient Medical Records Form .
