Purpose and Function

December 5, 2002

The University Library Board is a standing committee of the Academic Senate that periodically reports to the Senate. Minutes of Board meetings are shared with the Senate. The primary responsibility of the Board is the consideration of library matters as they affect the teaching and research of faculty and the learning environment of students. As such, the Board is advisory to the Dean of Libraries and reviews and recommends policies dealing with Library services, collections and facilities on behalf of faculty and students.

Organization

The Board consists of thirteen (13) members. Eight (8) of these are faculty and two (2) are students, one of whom must be a graduate/professional student. There are also three (3) ex-officio members: the Associate Director of Libraries, the Coordinator of Collection Development, and the Director of the Law Library.

The Provost makes appointments from nominations recommended by the Board. The Board elects its own chairperson from among the appointed faculty members.

Membership Procedures

The Board identifies interested faculty members for each position and forwards these names to the Provost for appointment. The Board may choose to have a subcommittee make contacts with faculty, to determine their willingness to serve, prior to the full Board considering the names.

In order to achieve a broad range of scholarly interests, two faculty members are chosen from each of the four discipline categories: 1) Humanities, 2) Social Sciences, 3) Health Sciences, and 4) Natural Sciences and Engineering. These categories were chosen because, in general, members of each of these groups share research and educational methods and/or concerns that provide similar points of view regarding library services and collections. Faculty members of the University Library Board serve for two calendar years. An attempt is made to stagger the two calendar year terms for faculty. While representing their constituencies, members of the Board should promote the special needs of individual units in the context of the general good of the Libraries.

The Vice President for Student Affairs and the Dean of the Graduate School recommends student members to the Board. The Board will forward the names to the Provost who will appoint them to the Board. Students will serve for one academic year.
