Introduction

Essential to Marquette University’s research and teaching mission are access to primary materials and scholarship worldwide, as well as deep expertise with managing scholarly information. Raynor Memorial Libraries are at the very core of these university functions, offering the Marquette community access to a vast range of research and archival collections, instructional services, dynamic spaces for study and collaboration, and more.

These functions continue to evolve as the information landscape changes. New tools for teaching, learning, and conducting research are emerging, and the ways people find and communicate information are constantly changing. As a result, the Libraries face an array of complex challenges and opportunities.

These functions continue to evolve as the information landscape changes. New tools for teaching, learning, Chief among the challenges is meeting an ever-growing demand for digital scholarly resources. The cost of these materials are growing exponentially faster than our financial resources, and these costs must be balanced with those required to maintain our essential print collections and library services. We are committed to exploring new ways to resolve this tension, including strategic partnerships both inside and outside the libraries and advocating for alternative publishing models.

At the same time, we are finding exciting new opportunities to contribute our expertise and build new services in teaching, learning, and scholarship. These range from partnering with faculty on new digital scholarship and instructional initiatives to enhancing services for data management and digital creativity. We are also exploring new ways to enhance access to our resources and our expertise to the Marquette community whenever and wherever needed, be it in person or online.

Above all, we are committed to supporting the university’s Catholic, Jesuit mission and to enhancing its standing as a well-respected research university with an increasingly global reach.
