History: The Diocese of St. Petersburg was erected from territory in the dioceses of Miami and St. Augustine, 1968, and it lost territory when a  new diocese was erected, 1984. St. Petersburg and its predecessors supported the following evangelization among Native Americans:

1549-1763 (destroyed by English Carolinians and Native allies)

Spanish Franciscans and Jesuits evangelized Native Americans, e.g. Apalachee, Timucua) in La Florida (present-day Georgia and Florida)


St. Petersburg Diocese Office of Multi-Cultural Ministry established, which has supported cultural and evangelization activities among Native Americans (e.g. Aztec, Maya, Cherokee) and the Tekakwitha Conference
