History: The Jesuit Archives and Research Center, St. Louis, Missouri, has consolidated the bulk of the archival holdings of the U.S. Jesuit provinces, 2018-present. However, the Georgetown University Special Collections, Washington, D.C., has retained the Maryland Province Archives and the Marquette University Special Collections and Archives has retained the bulk of the Jesuit Native ministry records from the Native American missions and schools in South Dakota and Wyoming.

St. Ignatius Loyola founded the Jesuits (Society of Jesus), 1534; it was suppressed, 1773, and restored, 1814. In the United States, Jesuits have evangelized Native Americans, 1625-1773, and 1814-present. Post-restoration Jesuits evangelized them through the following provinces, missions, parishes, and schools. For more information, see the guide entries for these parishes and corresponding dioceses.

1814-1833	The U.S. Jesuit Mission visited Native tribes in Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont
1833-1850	The Maryland Jesuit Province revived and administered St. Ann Church (Penobscot), Old Town, Maine
1823-1863 (transferred to Missouri Jesuit Province)	The Missouri Mission of the Maryland Jesuit Province administered the Native missions in Iowa, Kansas, and Missouri; see below: "History of the Missouri Mission of the Maryland Jesuit Province"
